Pol Science II exam question: A federation of industrial chambers

The question (6 marks)

A federation of industrial chambers spends a year pressing the government for lower corporate taxes and lighter regulation. It contests no election, fields no candidate, and its president says it merely places expert advice before decision-makers. In the same period an association of landless agricultural labourers makes the opposite case and is not heard. (i) State three differences between a political party and an interest group. (ii) How does an interest group influence policy, and what are the drawbacks of such influence for democratic decision-making? (6 marks)

MU Module IV, parties and interest groups; pack ch. 04 sections 2.1-2.3.

Plan your answer on paper before you look at the authorities — issue first, then the rule, then apply it to these facts.

How an answer is marked

A full-marks answer names the issue in one line, states the rule with its section, cites the authority, applies it to these facts and concludes — in that order. The app's model answer for this question is written in exactly that shape, with a checklist to mark your own attempt against.
