The question (12 marks)
Consider four residents of the same locality. A works as a clerk, hopes for promotion and applies for it in the usual way. B wants the same income that A's superiors enjoy but, finding the examinations closed to him, joins a gang that sells stolen goods. C has stopped believing that anyone in the office is ever promoted, but arrives punctually every day and follows every circular to the letter. D has given up both the ambition and the routine and lives without work or fixed address by choice. (a) Place each of the four against Merton's typology of deviance and justify each placement by reference to his two criteria. (b) State what follows for a legislature that proposes to deal with B's conduct by raising the punishment. (12 marks)

How an answer is marked
A full-marks answer names the issue in one line, states the rule with its section, cites the authority, applies it to these facts and concludes — in that order. The app's model answer for this question is written in exactly that shape, with a checklist to mark your own attempt against.
