Sociology exam question: Two families of the same village are in

The question (12 marks)

Two families of the same village are in dispute over a boundary. In the first year the stronger family simply fences the land and the weaker family stops using it. The next year, in a second dispute between two families of equal standing, each gives up part of its claim and the matter ends. In a third dispute the panchayat is asked to step in: on one occasion its decision is made binding on both families beforehand, on another it merely advises, and on a third it works only at persuading the families into friendship. (a) Identify the process at work in all three disputes and place each outcome within the named methods of that process. (b) A bank places a clause in its loan agreements requiring every borrower to accept a decision of an arbitrator chosen by the bank. Which of those methods does that clause in truth belong to, and why? (12 marks)

Plan your answer on paper before you look at the authorities — issue first, then the rule, then apply it to these facts.

How an answer is marked

A full-marks answer names the issue in one line, states the rule with its section, cites the authority, applies it to these facts and concludes — in that order. The app's model answer for this question is written in exactly that shape, with a checklist to mark your own attempt against.
